A quote request that includes only a dimensional drawing leaves out the specifications that most affect cost, lead time, and long-term reliability in automotive applications. Here's what to include to get an accurate, automotive-ready quote the first time.
SPECIFY THESE ALONGSIDE YOUR DRAWING
- Material grade. Not just "steel" or "stainless" — specify the exact grade (e.g. SPCC, SK5/SK7, 304/316) since automotive tolerances and performance requirements often depend on it.
- Finish and corrosion requirement. Specify whether the application requires Geomet/DACROMET-level protection or whether standard zinc plating meets the exposure requirement.
- Fatigue life / cycle count expectation. Share expected duty cycles so process steps like shot peening and heat treatment can be recommended appropriately.
- Electrical function, if any. Flag whether the part also needs to conduct electricity or ground a circuit — this changes the material family under consideration.
- Certification requirements. Confirm whether your program requires PPAP submission, and at what level, alongside the part quote.
- Volume and program timeline. Prototype quantities and full production volume should both be shared so pricing and capacity planning reflect the full program, not just the first order.
